NOS Nitrous

The last time you went to the dentist and had any kind of major dental work done that required gas, you probably knew he was using laughing gas or NOS nitrous oxide. What you probably did not realize is the last time you went to your favorite coffee shop and had them add big, fluffy pile of whipped cream to the top of your cappuccino that nitrous was involved. Nitrous oxide has been around for over 200 years, but only in the last few years has it become a common gas in the food industry. When NOS nitrous oxide was first synthesized by Joseph Priestly in 1775 it was found that people who breathed it experienced a slight feeling of euphoria and a major reduction in the sensation of pain. It did not take long before doctors and dentist grasped this concept and began to use the gas as a way to control their patient's pain when surgery or major dental work had to be done.

The gas left them coherent enough to follow commands, but unable to feel any pain from the procedure. Fast forward to today and while NOS nitrous oxide is still being used by some dentists, you are more likely to see it on the race tracks and in the restaurants. Nitrous is an inert gas that is colorless and odorless which makes it the perfect propellant for things like cooking sprays. Add to that it has a slightly sweet taste which makes it the ideal gas to power a pressurized whipped cream dispenser. The NOS nitrous oxide is stored in small canisters called whippets that hold 8 g of the gas and are about 2.5 inches long, similar to a CO cartridge that you might see on a seltzer water dispenser or paintball gun. The neck is specifically shaped to fit into the dispenser and has an easily pierced foil cap. Until recently there were only 3 factories in Europe who manufactured these whippets.

With the European cartridges there was never any question of quality as the consumable products laws there are very strict and heavily enforced. In recent years there has been an influx of much cheaper Chinese made NOS nitrous oxide whippets. Considering the recent problems with other food products, the food industry is being very cautious regarding the use of whippets that have been made in China no matter how much cheaper they are. The problem does not lie so much in the gas itself as it does with the steel cylinder and the toxic oils used in its manufacture. In Europe each cylinder undergoes multiple washes to ensure that it is perfectly clean and sterile, people are unsure as to whether or not the Chinese do the same thing. If you are looking for top quality European made NOS nitrous oxide whippets at an affordable price you need to go to Cream Right. Here you will not only find a good source of Austrian nitrous chargers or whippets but a complete line of whipped cream dispensers and other hard to find culinary devices that can be shipped directly to your restaurant or home.
